Pembahasan

Salah satu grammar atau tata bahasa dalam Bahasa Inggris adalah tenses. Tenses merupakan grammar dalam Bahasa Inggris yang berbasis verb (kata kerja). Umumnya, tenses digunakan untuk menunjukkan waktu atau keadaan suatu tindakan/aktivitas pada saat sebuah kalimat diucapkan.

Dilihat dari konteks waktu, terdapat 3 istilah dalam tenses, yakni:

• Past → suatu tindakan atau aktivitas yang sudah berlalu (lampau).
• Present → suatu tindakan atau aktivitas yang masih berlangsung saat ini (sekarang).
• Future → suatu tindakan atau aktivitas yang akan datang (masa depan).

Sementara, jika dilihat dari konteks keadaan, terdapat 2 istilah di dalam tenses, yakni:

• Continuous → suatu tindakan atau aktivitas yang belum selesai dilakukan atau masih berlangsung (berkelanjutan).
• Perfect → suatu tindakan atau aktivitas yang sudah selesai dilakukan.

Setidaknya, terdapat 16 jenis tenses dalam Bahasa Inggris. Namun, yang akan kita bahas kali ini hanya dua tenses saja sesuai dengan tenses yang digunakan pada dua soal diatas.

1. Simple Present Tense

Tenses yang pertama ini digunakan pada soal nomor 2. Simple present tense adalah tenses yang pada umumnya sering digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu tindakan atau aktivitas yang biasa dilakukan. Rumus simple present tense:

Positive (+): Subject + Verb 1 (s/es) + Object

Negative (-): Subject + Do/Does + not + Verb 1 + Object

Interogative (?): Do/Does + Subject + Verb 1 + Object

Notes:

• Does digunakan untuk subjek he, she, it, nama orang maupun nama benda tunggal.
• Do digunakan untuk subjek i, you, they, we, nama orang maupun nama benda jamak (lebih dari satu).
• Verb 1 ditambahkan -es apabila verb/kata kerjanya berakhiran -ss, -ch, -sh, -x, dan -o.
• Akhiran –s/–es pada Verb 1 dihilangkan untuk kalimat negative dan interogative karena sudah ada kata do/does.

2. Present Continuous Tense

Tenses yang kedua ini digunakan dalam soal nomor 1. Present continuous tense adalah tenses yang pada umumnya digunakan untuk menyatakan tindakan atau kejadian yang sedang dilakukan pada saat kalimat diucapkan. Dalam Bahasa Indonesia, kita bisa mengetahuinya dengan menggunakan kata “sedang”, seperti “Saya sedang makan” atau “Saya sedang belajar Bahasa Inggris”. Rumus present continuous tense:

Positive (+): Subject + to be (is/am/are) + Verb ing + Object

Negative (-): Subject + to be (is/am/are) + not + Verb ing + Object

Interogative (?): To be (is/am/are) + Subject + Verb ing + Object
